Bone Graft for Dental Implants

In dentistry, bone augmentation procedures – also known as bone grafts – are a preparatory procedure preceding dental implants. A bone graft may be required if you don’t have sufficient jawbone to support a dental implant.

The bone graft procedure builds the bone so that it is strong enough to keep and hold a future dental implant over time.

Will my own bone be used during bone augmentation treatment?

Not commonly. When we carry out a bone graft for tooth implant treatment, we endeavour to use bone derived from different sources. However, it depends on the condition of your bones in other areas of your body like the chin or hips. If your bones are generally not dense enough, a processed bone material will be used.

I wear a partial denture. Can I use it after the bone graft procedure?

Since each bone augmentation procedure is unique, your dentist will be best placed to decide whether it is possible to place a denture onto a site that contains a bone graft.
