A filling is a restoration for teeth that are damaged by bacteria and decay.
Before a filling can be applied, your dentist must first remove and clean the decayed tooth. The dentist then uses a filling material to restore the tooth structure and function.
Fillings help to prevent further decay from occurring on the treated tooth.
What are fillings made out of?
Today’s dentistry methods generally prefer fillings made from a composite resin material since they closely resemble the appearance and shade of a natural tooth.
Composite resin is also used in cosmetic dentistry to mask tooth discolouration and improve the shape, alignment and aesthetics of a tooth or teeth.
Glass Ionomer Cement (GIC) is also a tooth coloured filling material that is commonly used in dentistry. It bonds to the tooth surface and releases fluoride that helps with decay prevention. It is often placed on the base of deeper cavities because it provides excellent insulation around nerve tissues.
Amalgam (silver) is also a popular filling, especially for molars.
Does getting a filling hurt?
At Primadent, our dental therapist uses pain-free anaesthesia to numb the area surrounding the affected tooth, which blocks the nerves in your teeth and prevents any discomfort. At our practice, patient comfort is our priority.
What can I expect the days after my treatment?
Some feelings of mild discomfort are normal after getting a filling. If you are experiencing discomfort, over-the-counter pain relief medicine may be recommended to help you feel better.
